I am leaving Ultima Online

Posted in Uncategorized on October 3, 2011 by Mark

I’ll keep this simple:

I will no longer be playing Ultima Online. I am holding an auction on the Stratics Forums to sell my houses and all of their contents. If you are interested in bidding, visit the forum and read the rules posted there.

Thanks for the memories.

Lady Tang Saved By Dread Pirate

Posted in Main Page on September 11, 2011 by Mark

This afternoon it came to the attention of the maritime community that Lady Tang had been abducted by the nefarious DeadBob. A small fleet quickly assembled and the hunt began.

Three ships spotted DeadBob’s ship, The Mann Act and initiated pursuit. DeadBob’s clumsy handling of his craft led to a quick capture with Lady Grace seizing the ship as a prize.

After transferring custody of DeadBob to the proper authorities, Lady Grace transferred command of the ship to Lord Splinter. A noted Paladin with the MAGX guild, Lord Splinter will oversee the refurbishment of the ship and the training of the crew.

The Lady Tang will now serve as a rescue ship. She currently docked at the MAGX docks in New Haven awaiting deployment.

***UPDATE***

In response to the threat of Piracy in the Lost Lands, Lord Raven of Minoc has promoted Lady Nil to the rank of Captain and put her in charge of the Infiltrator.

She arrived at the docks in Papua late yesterday, took on provisions and questioned the locals as to any unusual ship sightings.

This morning the crew finished taking on provisions and test-fired the cannon. The townsfolk were right startled at the noise, but are reassured that someone is taking the security of the High Seas seriously.

What have the Devs done now?

Posted in Main Page, Raven's Musings with tags , , , , , , , , on August 1, 2011 by Mark
The Devs have “simplified” the game.

I had a spot of free time today and decided to visit Sosaria. It took a few seconds for the new patch to load, and this?! DANG YOU DEVS!

I guess that the players who have been complaining that the game is too complicated got their wish!

For those that thought Fishing, Cooking and Camping were useless skills… now it’s all that you can do. Of course, for exercise you can also enjoy a bit of Lumberjacking.

Maybe you could try your hand at Mining, if you happened to have a shovel in your backpack when the patch was activated.

Personally, I find the upgraded game quite peaceful and am looking forward to many hours of solitude, frying fish and staring at the sun until my eyes bleed.

Just kidding folks. Since I haven’t visited Sosaria in a while, I spent some time today visiting old friends houses leaving “hello” messages. I had to idle two accounts to pay for a recent RAM upgrade so other than the occasional Daemon-bashing, not much has been going on.

The video hunting guides I mentioned are still on the board, and my crafters will return next payday when I re-instate their accounts. So keep monitoring my Twitter feed and YouTube channels for updates.

Until then, I am counting on you to continue the fight against evil so that Sosaria may remain free for all it’s inhabitants!

The resurrection of (my) BlackBerry.

Posted in Main Page on July 21, 2011 by Mark

About three weeks ago I did the unthinkable. I ran my BlackBerry Curve through the wash. I was house-sitting for a friend and using an unfamiliar machine. The disruption in my routine led to a break-down in my usually careful pre-wash check. To add insult to injury, about halfway through the wash cycle, I noticed that the washer water level was set to low. So I set it to high, and added a rinse cycle as well!

By the end of the wash, I began to have that icky feeling that something was wrong. As the washer spun down from its final spin cycle I noticed that my cell phone was nowhere to be found. I realized what I had done.

A frantic Google search for tips to recover from disaster provided discouraging information. Most situations that resulted in complete, extended submersion destroyed the device.

I immediately pulled the battery, and used a blow dryer set to cool to try to dry the phone. Without the tool needed to open the phone, I was unable to completely dry the interior. The next day, a friend suggested that I put the phone in a bag of rice. It seems that rice acts as a desiccant.

After a few days in the rice bag, I installed the battery and turned the phone on. The red power light came on, but nothing else. I decided to try a couple more days in the rice bag, just to be safe. After some more grain assisted drying, I plugged in the charger and powered up the phone. Again, the red LED was the only sign of life.

A couple more days of this and finally success! The backlighting on the screen lit up and the hourglass began to spin. I was elated. Was the phone really coming back to life?!

The answer, no. After a few minutes of spinning, the hourglass faded and the phone turned off. It would not re-start. I figured that by this time the phone was truly toasted. I cancelled the account and put the phone on my dresser.

A couple of weeks went by and I found that I just couldn’t give up on my BlackBerry. The other night, I tried once again to attach the charger and start the phone. The red LED came on, the screen lit up and the little hourglass began to spin. I didn’t get my hopes up as I had been through this before.

My heart leapt when the AT&T logo appeared!

I was sure that the screen would soon fade out as it had before, but after a couple of minutes the AT&T logo gave way to the desktop… or whatever you call the main screen. I tried several functions, audio, contacts, chess app, everything was working except for the camera. The camera app would start, but the view screen would remain black and usually after a few seconds I would get a message saying:

Could not start the camera. Close other applications and try opening the camera again.

I had closed the AT&T account so there is no way to test transmission and reception but everything else seems to be working well. After leaving the phone on all night, the alarm worked and the battery level seems stable.

Will the phone work reliably? I’ll have to wait till next payday before I can re-activate it… I can’t wait to find out.

How to be a better mage.

Posted in Main Page, Raven's Musings with tags , , , , , on June 21, 2011 by Mark

Magery is a very popular skill in Ultima Online, however it can be one of the most difficult to master effectively. A young mage must be prepared for a long and expensive training regimen before even the most basic monsters can be defeated. The lucky mage will find a benefactor and perhaps a full LRC (Lower Reagent Cost) suit  to practice with. Before LRC armor, Magery was a very expensive skill to train as reagents are used to cast spells, and had to be replenished constantly.

This article is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to building a mage from scratch. I am gearing these comments toward a mid-level to GM mage seeking to optimize their skill and power. Also, I don’t intend to focus on equipment. Not only can LRC armor be quite expensive, armor is also a very specific choice based on the preferred play style of the mage.

There are six important magery skills that have a direct effect on performance:

  1. Magery: This skill has a direct effect on your chance to successfully cast a spell. Get it as high as you can afford. A 120 Magery powerscroll can be expensive so start by purchasing cheaper scrolls that will get you over the GM level.
  2. Evaluate Intelligence: This skill will gain automatically when you cast spells, however to advance to the higher levels you may have to focus on techniques that give the best gains. This skill has a direct effect on SDI (Spell Damage Increase) and at GM+ levels can add a significant punch to your spells.
  3. Inscription: Although you might not think of inscription as a fighting skill, at GM level it adds a 10% damage bonus to spells.
  4. Meditation: Without manna, you can’t even cast spells so the ability to regenerate manna is very important to a mage. You want this skill at GM+ levels.
  5. Focus: Many Mages overlook this skill, but Focus actually boosts manna and stamina regen. Focus skill gains quickly and you should try for GM+ skill level. A Focus powerscrcoll will be a lot less expensive then a Meditation scroll, so it might be a good option for a younger mage to invest in this skill first. Don’t underestimate the added Stamina regen, as a mage you will put most of your stats into Intelligence and you will probably end up with Stamina as the lowest stat. The added regen from focus will help keep you mobile when you take a beating.
  6. Resisting Spells: Some templates drop this skill in favor of something else, but you can’t cast spells while paralyzed. You can’t heal, move or do damage to your opponent. I recommend 90-GM+ Resisting Spells. You can adjust this based on what other skills are in your template.

Skills that compliment magery:

  • Chivalry: If you don’t like carrying around Enchanted Apples, you might consider adding 40 points of Chivalry so you can use the Remove Curse spell. Since there is a use timer on Enchanted Apples, you may want this spell for the times you find you can’t stuff one more apple down your throat.
  • Mysticism: Many Mysticism spells compliment magery spells very well. Cleansing Wind provides a combination heal/cure/remove curse spell. The Rising Colossus is usually more durable than an Energy Vortex. The offensive spells deal a good bit of damage and Spell Plague has a residual Chaos Damage effect that can combine with other spells. Focus substitutes for Imbuing to determine the effectiveness of Cleansing Winds so if you’ve already added Focus to your Magery template, you don’t need to learn Imbuing.

Now here is where it gets personal. Some folks may wonder why I am not recommending Necromancy, or Spellweaving as complimentary skills. I’ve built templates using both and found them to be ineffective for my particular style of play. Necromancy also requires Spirit Speak, so by the time you get those to at least GM level, you end up compromising on other skills. Spellweaving relies on Arcane Focus, and unless you can achieve that you will find the offensive spells sorely under-powered. The Mage/Poisoner template takes advantage of a bonus that Poisoning skill can give to Poisoning spells. Since many of the more powerful monsters are immune to Poison, this has limited use in PvM (Player vs. Monster) battles. However if you prefer PvP (Player vs. Player) combat then you might consider this a valuable addition to your template.

If you use the skills I’ve recommended above, you will maximize the damage caused by Magery spells, and boost your Manna regeneration so that you can cast more spells for longer periods. Like Archers, a Mage delivers ranged damage, and avoids direct physical combat. Your character stats will focus mostly on Intelligence, but be sure to keep enough strength to wear your armor and equip your shield even when cursed.

Another personal choice in designing your Mage is the selection of Race. Race selection doesn’t just have an effect on appearance, there are distinct advantages to each race. As a Mage, you may consider the Elven race to obtain the Manna boost, but in my personal experience I found that Humans are more durable in direct combat. I took a fully developed Human Mage, ran him through the Human to Elf quest and with no changes to his template or equipment I proceeded to test him against several “benchmark” critters. My Elven Mage died more often than the Human. While it’s true that the Manna boost let him cast more spells, I found that I was casting more Greater Heal spells just to stay alive. So, the extra Manna went towards staying alive, not causing damage to my opponent. I’m not saying that Human Mages are superior to Elven Mages. It all depends on how you fight with your Mage, and what kind of critters you tend to fight the most.

If you’re tired of being Human consider the new Gargoyle Race as an option for your Mage. They get a bonus to Manna Regen that stacks on top of Focus and Meditation, and they have an intuitive understanding of Mysticism. They are tough, and the ability to fly makes it unnecesary to use a mount for speed. Rising Colossus uses 5/5 pet slots so if you plan on using that spell you can retain your ability to maneuver swiftly by flying.

When I created my first Gargoyle Mage, I found that LRC Gargoyle armor was in limited supply. You also need to remember that they will not be able to equip certain items that are readily available for Humans. Thanks to Imbuing, custom jewelry and armor can be crafted for Gargoyles which rivals the best Human Mage suits available. At present, it’s pretty easy to find a wide variety of crafted Gargoyle armor. And the devs have added several Gargoyle-only artifacts that can compliment various skills.

Like every character template, there is no “perfect” Mage. I have developed Mages with specialized skills based on what and where they fight. In UO, any character that tries to generalize in a number of skills usually ends up being mediocre at all of them. Decide what your character’s strengths are and focus on them. If you role-play, your character history may also dictate what skills you need. The most important thing, have fun!

If you want to learn more about the specific benefits of the various skills mentioned in this post, I recommend a visit to the UO Guide.

Journey to the Athenaeum Isle

Posted in Main Page, Raven's Musings with tags , , , , , on June 16, 2011 by Mark

Zhah, the Gargoyle Queen is recruiting fighters to venture to the Athenaeum Isle to battle the Minions of Scelestus. The Gargoyles have been fighting evil for centuries and it seems that an ancient and monstrous evil is making it’s presence felt again in the land of Ter Mur.

She is also offering a reward for returned Gargish Documents that were part of the Great Library located on the island. If you slay 5 Minions of Scelestus, and return 10 Gargish Documents you will receive a book: Chronicle of the Gargoyle Queen Vol. I.

Having accepted the quest and ventured to the island, I shall share some of my experiences so that you may prepare yourself for the horrors that await you.

To assist you in your pursuit of adventure, I have commissioned a series of illustrations that include maps of the area, and the locations of the teleporters. You do not need to accept the quest to pass through the teleporters. Be wary though, vicious Raptors populate the area around the teleporter to the island.

After you pass through the teleporter, follow the path to the North and you will see an Ankh. Make a note of the location, as you will die often while fighting the horrendous beasts that infest the island.

So far, I have encountered three aggressive creatures. The Toxic Slith and Trapdoor Spider can inflict a dangerous poison so watch for them. The Trapdoor Spider has a vicious attack and can cause a good of amount of damage in a short time. They are very susceptible to fire damage, so if you’re a mage try Flame Strikes and Explosion spells. If you’re a melee fighter, bring along a weapon that does fire damage.

In addition to the typical physical and Magery attacks, the Minions can also dismount and poison. Orange petals do not stop the spread of poison, so be prepared to cure yourself during combat. The Minions are also very intelligent and can sense a nearby battle. Often while you are fighting one, others will be attracted to the area and you will have a real fight on your hands then!

They are territorial, so if you withdraw too far they will teleport back to their point of origin.

Lord Splinter battles a Minion of Scelestus

They are not quite as persistent as a Paragon Daemon when in pursuit, so a mounted individual can outrun them easily. The main threat is that the island is heavily populated by these creatures so in running from one, you will certainly encounter another.

The only safe area seems to be around the teleporter and Ankh. Apparently some powerful magic permeates the area which keeps the Minions, Toxic Slith and Trapdoor Spiders away.
